What is a guayabera?

A guayabera is a men's shirt cut for heat: light linen, an open straight hem worn untucked, four patch pockets, and columns of vertical pleats — alforzas — running down the front and back. In the Dominican Republic and much of the Caribbean the same shirt is called a chacabana. It reads as formal enough for a wedding and relaxed enough for a Saturday lunch, which is exactly why it has survived for more than a century.

A short history

The guayabera's origins are Cuban, traced to the Sancti Spíritus region in the 18th and 19th centuries, where field workers wanted a long shirt with deep pockets that could be worn loose over trousers. It travelled with migration across the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and Florida, and in several countries it eventually became formal national dress — worn to weddings, state occasions and offices where a wool jacket makes no sense in 32°C heat.

Guayabera vs. chacabana: is there a difference?

They are the same garment under two names. "Guayabera" dominates in Cuba, Mexico and the United States; "chacabana" is the Dominican and Puerto Rican term, and it usually implies the dressier version: cleaner pleating, plain white or a solid colour, and often worn as groom and groomsmen attire. Other regional names you may meet are camisa de cuatro bolsillos, guayabana and Mexican wedding shirt.

The fabric matters more than anything

The shirt only works if the cloth breathes. Three options you will see:

• 100% linen. The most breathable and the one that ages best — it softens with every wash and creases honestly. This is what our linen guayaberas are cut from, at $300 USD.
• Linen blend. Linen mixed with cotton: slightly more structured, wrinkles less, easier for daily wear and travel. Our linen blend chacabanas are $200 USD.
• Polyester blends. Cheap, shiny, and they trap heat — the reason many people think they dislike guayaberas.

How to wear a guayabera

• Always untucked. The straight hem is designed to sit at mid-hip, roughly where your trouser pockets end.
• Weddings. White 100% linen, long sleeve, with linen or light wool trousers. No tie — the collar is meant to be open.
• Business and evening. A solid colour — black, navy, sand — long sleeve, with leather loafers.
• Daytime and travel. Short sleeve in a linen blend with chinos or dark denim.

Sizing, including big and tall

A guayabera should be relaxed through the body but clean across the shoulder — the seam sits where your shoulder ends, not down your arm. Sleeves finish at the wrist bone. Caring for linen

Cold wash, gentle cycle, no bleach. Hang it damp and most creases fall out on their own; iron on the linen setting while slightly damp if you want it crisp. Never tumble dry hot — that is what shortens a linen shirt's life. Store on a hanger, not folded under weight.
